KAIST Professor Seung-Hwa Ryu’s Research Team Develops AI-Based Probabilistic Prediction Technology for Landslide Impact Zones

Postdoctoral researcher Yongjin Choi from Professor Seung-Hwa Yoo's research team in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at KAIST has developed an artificial intelligence (AI)-based technology that probabilistically predicts and evaluates the impact range of soil landslides by incorporating spatially heterogeneous soil characteristics.

Unlike traditional single-value prediction methods, this research enables a more realistic risk assessment by providing comprehensive analysis, including the probability that each specific area will fall within the hazard zone following a landslide's movement and spread.

Notably, the AI framework effectively reduces the heavy computational burden associated with conventional simulation methods while maintaining high predictive accuracy. By drastically cutting the time required for large-scale iterative analyses, the team has significantly enhanced the practical usability of the technology for real-world disaster risk assessment.

Furthermore, the technology demonstrated its capability to capture "low-probability, high-risk" scenarios that are often overlooked by existing evaluation systems focused primarily on average values.

The research team stated that this achievement demonstrates the practical potential of AI-based probabilistic disaster prediction technology. They expect it to serve as a foundational technology supporting scientific disaster response and rational decision-making in the future.
